Our Story

Bri is a native to the Outer Banks, Riley an Aussie from far North Queensland. They met the summer of 2016 while both working as ocean rescue lifeguards on the Outer Banks. Bri had a dream to start an all girls surf club. Riley supported that dream and helped her every step of the way. They called it Outer Babes. 

Outer Babes planted the seed that eventually blossomed into Outer Surf. Seeing the impact of Outer Babes, Bri expanded her vision, creating a surf company committed to cultivating a lively surf culture and community.

Established in 2018, Outer Surf began with a humble and organic start, gradually adding equipment and growing their numbers. Initially without a physical location, they set up surf camps in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, choosing the friendliest and least crowded breaks. In October 2021, Outer Surf found its home at 2500 South Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head. Today, they offer surf lessons and camps for all ages, Women's surf retreats, classes, and host various community events. Their surf shop showcases local art, handmade goods, and their own gear. Their exceptional team of instructors include professionals, locals, lifeguards, teachers, and talented high schoolers.

Today, Outer Surf continues to carry forward the values of empowerment, community, and the celebration of art and surfing. 

Outer Babes

Recognizing the need for a female surf community on the Outer Banks, Bri established Outer Babes as a platform to connect and empower young surfer girls through the combined love of art and surfing. Surf club meet-ups were (and still are) held during the school year, providing a space for the girls to grow and empower one another.

Our Building

We have been in our current location since October 2021. The concrete building was originally constructed in 1950 and became Scarborough Garage; an iconic historical landmark remembered and cherished by locals. 

Our building has been home to many unique businesses throughout the years including Scarborough Garage, a pet store, beach shop, and Farmdogs surf school and beach services. 

We feel so blessed to call this special place home.
