How long is a surf lesson?

An hour and a half. The first portion will be spent on the beach learning ocean safety and surfing basics. The remaining time will be spent in the water catching waves.

Where does the lesson take place and how early should I arrive?

The lesson will start at our shop. We will walk over to the beach to surf! We advise you to arrive 5-10 minutes early at the Outer Surf building!

Where is Outer Surf located?

We are located at 2500 S Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head. Mile post 10.5

What should I bring to my lesson?

We provide surfboards and wetsuits (if needed), so all you need to bring is water, sunscreen, and cash if you would like to tip your instructors.

How old do I have to be to take a lesson?

Lessons are for ages 6+. The surfer must be comfortable in the ocean and able to swim on their own without floaties or a lifejacket. We suggest starting young kids with private lessons for safety precautions and so that they can be one on one with their instructor.

What is Outer Surf's cancellation policy?

Cancellation by Customer:

  • Within 24 hours of booking: Full refund or option to reschedule, as long as the booking is made 48 hours or more prior to the scheduled activity.
  • Up to 24 hours before the scheduled activity: 75% refund or option to reschedule. A 25% booking fee to reserve your spot will not be refunded.
  • Less than 24 hours before the scheduled activity: No refund.

Cancellation by the Business:

  • If we need to cancel the activity due to unforeseen circumstances, hazardous weather, or dangerous surf conditions, you will receive the choice of a credit, a full refund, or the option to reschedule.

No-Show Policy:

  • If you do not show up for your scheduled activity, no refund will be issued.

Interruption During Lesson:

  • If hazardous weather or surf conditions arise during the lesson:
    • If 1 hour or more of the lesson has been completed, the lesson is considered complete.
    • If less than 1 hour of the lesson has been completed, we will either reschedule the remaining time or issue a partial refund:
      • Cancellation within 30 minutes results in a 66% refund.
      • Cancellation between 30 and 60 minutes results in a 33% refund.

When you book with us, we are reserving your spot and we expect you to adhere to the schedule of your reservation.

What happens if it storms and conditions become hazardous?

If we need to cancel your lesson due to storms or dangerous ocean conditions, we will contact you as soon as possible to reschedule your lesson or issue you a full refund.

Interruption During Lesson:

If hazardous weather or surf conditions arise during the lesson:

  • If 1 hour or more of the lesson has been completed, the lesson is considered complete.
  • If less than 1 hour of the lesson has been completed, we will either reschedule the remaining time or issue a partial refund:

How much does it cost to take a surf lesson with Outer Surf?

A private lesson (1 surfer to 1 instructor) is $125. A couples lesson (2 surfers to 1 instructor) is $200. A group lesson with three or more surfers is $85 per surfer, and there will never be more than 4 surfers to 1 instructor.

Can I pay when I get there for my lesson?

We do require a card on file at the time of booking; However, we can hold off on charging it until you arrive. If you violate our cancelation policy your card on file will be charged.

I've never surfed before, can I take a lesson with Outer Surf?

Yes! Our instructors will tailor your lesson based on your surfing level.

Is there parking?

We have customer parking at our shop. There is also public parking across the street at the Abalone Street beach access.

What amenities does Outer Surf have?

We have customer parking, an outdoor shower, a bathroom, and a storefront with all of your surfing needs. We also have studio space for yoga and pilates classes.

I don’t know how to swim. Can I take a lesson?

No. It is a requirement for all lessons, board rentals, and ocean activities to know how to swim.
